Rockingham Memorial Hospital Donates 7 Cardiac Science Automated External Defibrillators to the Community

RMH Heart and Vascular Services presented four schools and three community centers of Rockingham County with Cardiac Science Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) on May 5, 2009

An AED is used during CPR to restore normal heart rhythm to those who are suffering from sudden cardiac arrest.

RMH is the first hospital in the state of Virginia to donate AEDs as part of the program called HeartSafe.  Heartsafe, a joint partnership between St. Jude Medical Center and Cardiac Science, helps provide AEDs to communities and help raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest.

Cardiac Science AED Field Corrective Update

Cardiac Science is conducting a voluntary correction of certain automated external defibrillators (AEDs) which may not have received complete testing prior to being shipped from the factory. Our test records indicate the fixture used to perform product final test may not have allowed for complete evaluation of the AED functionality. While there has been no reported field failure and our analysis indicated that the likelihood of this happening is remote, we will be providing affected customers with replacement devices and asking them to return their affected AEDs.

Customers with affected devices should keep their AEDs in service until they receive their replacement devices.

Quality is our top priority. We stand behind every product and service we provide, which is why we are taking this voluntary action. We do apologize for any inconvenience.

ZOLL AED Plus Defibrillator Recall

ZOLL Medical Corporation and FDA notified healthcare professionals of a Class 1 recall of ZOLL AED Plus Defibrillators distributed from May, 2004 through February 9, 2009. The recall was initiated because the device may fail to deliver a defibrillation shock, which could result in failure to resuscitate a patient during treatment of sudden cardiac arrest. On February 12 and March 31, 2009, the company sent their distributors and customers recall letters with recommendations and instructions for customers on specific steps to mitigate the identified problems with this device. See the Zoll letter at link below for details.

Philips Heartstart MRx  Defibrillator Recall

Philips Healthcare has issued a recall for the HeartStart MRx M3535A/M3536A Defibrillators/Monitors, manufactured from March 2006 to March 2009.  The therapy switch in affected devices has a potential to fail, causing the device to either spontaneously turn on or to fail to respond to user initiated turn-on.  As a result, the device may be rendered unusable for monitoring and therapy.  Philips Healthcare sent notice to their customs explaining the problem and how to it can be corrected.  To find out more information regarding this recall, contact your local Philips representative at 1-800-722-9377 and see customer letter.

AHA announces Hands-Only CPR
Hands-only CPR can increase odds of survival

On March 31, 2008 AHA announced a new method for CPR, it is called Hands-Only CPR. This new form of CPR was implemented to allow individuals to perform chest compressions without delay. Administration of breathing has been removed to insure compression delivery to the chest is done quickly. Hands-only CPR is performed only on ADULTS that have suddenly collapsed in front of you due to cardiac arrest. This new method does not replace traditional CPR Training.  This method is for those bystanders that do not feel comfortable delivering breaths to an adult in Cardiac Arrest.
